Choosing your first dance might seem like an easy decision but once couples realise how many amazing options there are the pressure can build. Maybe it’s your first date song or one played at your first concert together, or maybe just a tune you love to sing together. Whatever it is, it should be personal to you, but if you have different tastes in music or perhaps you just can’t choose, don’t worry because we’ve pulled together a list of our favourite top classic and modern first dance songs and some tips on selecting your music.

  1. Find a common love

You might not share the same taste in music but narrow down the selection by focusing on one genre you both like. Perhaps it’s  country,  jazz or maybe a bit of big band swing, then listen to a Spotify list with your partner and hopefully something will stand out.

  1. Look for lyrics that mean something

Finding a set of lyrics that tell your story is the difference between a love song and your love song. Perhaps you were friends before you started dating? Did you spend time in a long-distance relationship? Maybe this is a second marriage later in life.  Whatever your story, there is a song to tell it.

  1. Pick a beat you can dance to

You don’t need a choreographer or ballroom dance instructor, but you do need to feel comfortable dancing to your chosen song.  If your heart is set on certain lyrics but the song doesn’t quite have the right rhythm, why not ask your band or DJ to prepare a personal rendition?

  1. Don’t be afraid to be unconventional

Yes, it is traditional to dance an old-fashioned slow dance, but if that’s not your style don’t be afraid to be different.  Maybe it’s recreating the famous Johnny and Baby routine from Dirty Dancing or getting your bridesmaids involved like  American dancer Julianne Hough did at her wedding or even get the whole bridal party involved like Kate and Tim.
