2019 wrapped: the A-list weddings that defined the year

Posted: 10th Jan

As we go into the new year, there’s one thing we can say for sure – 2019 was the year of the celebrity wedding. With A-listers such as Jennifer Lawrence, Ellie Goulding, Justin Bieber and Idris Elba tying the knot, we were spoiled with wedding ideas and inspiration.

We saw everything from Victorian-inspired gowns and suede dinner suits to traditional English weddings and idyllic beach nuptials in exotic locations. Our 2019 celebs even gifted us with the return of shoulder pads.

So, before we move onto the new trends for 2020, we’re taking a look back at some of the celebrity weddings that defined the year.

Ellie Goulding’s royal gown

Ellie Goulding’s ceremony was a celebration of all things British – arriving in an old school Volkswagen campervan, exchanging vows in the historic York Minster Cathedral and, who can forget the Princess Anne inspired dress. The bespoke Chloé gown had our jaws dropping as the blushing bride glided down the aisle in the long-sleeved, hand embroidered masterpiece. We’re so used to seeing celebrities go for the alternative styles, so it was refreshing to see Ellie take a traditional approach, and she looked breathtakingly beautiful.

Marc Jacob’s fashion extravaganza

Fashion legend, Marc Jacobs, also tied the knot with now husband, Charly Defrancesco. With so many stars and legends, such as Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss on the guestlist, it was the MET Gala of celebrity weddings. Attendee outfits aside, Marc and Charly’s getups were nothing short of iconic. From Marc’s teal green oversized suit and classic Chanel clutch, to Charly’s suede emerald dinner suit, the pair set the trends for fashion-forward groomswear.

Hilary Duff and Sophie Turner rocking the shoulder pads

2019 or 1980? Who cares because we loved it! Childhood stars turned Hollywood princesses, actresses Hilary Duff and Sophie Turner both rocked the shoulder pad look on their big day. Both gave complete opposite takes on the style – Hilary taking the sleek and simple approach and Sophie going all out with a beautifully detailed long-sleeve plunge dress – and we couldn’t get enough of it. All we can say is that Matthew Koma and Joe Jonas are very lucky men.

Shattering hearts across the globe, Idris Elba made it official with his wife, Sabrina Dhowre in 2019. In true Idris Elba style, his wedding was a big party - with the groom even grabbing the mic to give his wedding guests an impromptu performance. From dance offs to Patron tequila shots, Idris and Sabrina really set the bar for fun, party weddings.

The Rock’s less is more celebration

When it comes to celebrity weddings, we’re used to seeing extravagant venues and embellished dresses. However, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and wife, Lauren Hashian opted for a private and humble ceremony to celebrate their marriage. Holding the do in The Rock’s beautiful home of Hawaii, the pair showed that sometimes less really is more with their intimate and romantic wedding – sharing their big day with no more than 100 guests.

The celebrity weddings of 2019 definitely raised the bar for fellow A-listers, and we can’t wait to see what trends the ceremonies of this year will bring.
